GOVERNMENT EXPENDITURES AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA (2000-2023)

This study investigates the effect of government expenditure on economic growth in Nigeria. Ex-post facto research design is employed with a scope that spanned between 2000-2023.Various pre and post estimation tests were conducted. A multiple regression analysis is conducted with the aid of e-views 10.0 statistical software. Findings revealed that government expenditure on defense has negative (-0.227775) and insignificant (0.8221) effect on RGDP of Nigeria, the study also found that government expenditure on education has positive (1.390735) and insignificant (0.1796) effect on RGDP of Nigeria; in the same vain government expenditure on health has positive (18.23052) and significant (0.0000) effect on RGDP of Nigeria. It is therefore concluded that government expenditure affects economic growth of Nigeria. The study recommends that policymakers should prioritize efficient allocation of defense resources, ensuring that the funds are directed towards areas that enhance national security without distracting from critical growth sectors. Government should increase investment in education while focusing on improving the quality of education through strategic reforms. Policymakers should ensure that healthcare funds are directed toward expanding access to medical services, improving healthcare infrastructure, and addressing public health challenges.
