HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND EMPLOYEES’ PERFORMANCE: A STUDY OF MINISTRY OF BUDGET AND ECONOMIC PLANNING, ABUJA, NIGERIA

  ABSTRACT
Sound human resource management practices have been found to be very essential in improving the performance of employees in an organization. The study investigates the impact of human resource management practices on employee performance in Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Abuja. The study adopts a survey research design involving a target population of 360 employees from records obtained from the Human Resources Department. From Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sampling table, the required sample size was 186. The structured questionnaire was administered to respondents in different departments, and 167 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Multiple regression analysis was done to test the impact of recruitment, training, and remuneration on the performance of employees using SPSS version 26. It was discovered that recruitment practices have positively impacted the performance of employees with the coefficient value of 0.404 and p-value of 0.000, which is less than the 0.005 significance level. Training had equally improved employee performance with the coefficient value of 0.514 and p-value of 0.000. Moreover, there is a significant positive relationship between compensation and employee performance, whereby the coefficient is 0.270 and the p-value is 0.000. The findings show the crucial importance of HRM activities in ensuring efficient and productive work force. In light of the above results, the recommendation that emanates from this research is for the Ministry to strengthen its recruiting process by adopting new recruiting techniques like competency tests, psychometric test, and structured interviews to select the best qualified individuals. Further, continuous training should be encouraged through conducting professional development programs and online training to improve employees' performance and productivity.
