PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE OF SELECTED FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES IN NORTH CENTRAL NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
When performance standards and expectations are not clearly defined, employees may
struggle to understand what is expected of them, making it difficult to align their efforts with
organizational goals. This study investigated Performance appraisal on employee
performance of selected federal universities in north central Nigeria. The population of study
consists of 1473 academic staff members of three selected Federal Universities in North
Central Nigeria which includes Federal University of Lokoja, University of Abuja and Open
University of Nigeria, Abuja. The sample size of the population was determined using
Slovins (1960) sample size determination formular to arrive at a sample size of 315. The
researcher distributed 315 questionnaires to the academic staff of the three selected
universities. Collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear
regression. The study revealed that continuous feedback has a positive and significant effect
(.712 B; P value =.000) on employee job performance in the selected Federal Universities in
North Central Nigeria. More also, it was found that rating scale has a positive and statistical
significant effect (.198 B; P value =.033) on employee job performance in the selected
Federal Universities in North central Nigeria. The study concluded that Performance
appraisal has positive and significant effect on employee performance of the selected federal
university in North central Nigeria. The study recommended that Universities should
prioritize the integration of continuous feedback practices to maximize the positive impact on
employee job performance. Furthermore, it was also recommended that Nigerian universities
should adopt and implement structured rating scales to effectively evaluate and monitor
employee job performance, providing a clear and standardized framework for assessment.
