VIGILANTE GROUPS IN CURBING INCESSANT ARMED ROBBERY IN ANYIGBA METROPOLIS OF DEKINA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, KOGI STATE, NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
One of the most prominent vigilante organizations in Nigeria is the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), which operates
in various states, including Kogi State. The town has experienced an upsurge in armed robbery incidents, targeting
businesses, students, and residents. Despite efforts by law enforcement agencies, Anyigba has continued to
experience a high rate of armed robbery, with criminals targeting homes, businesses, and travelers. The study focused
on role of vigilante groups in curbing incessant armed robbery in Anyigba Metropolis The study adopted Social Control
Theory. The study used both primary and secondary sources of data collection. The population of the study was (109)
with sample size of 85. The study revealed that vigilante groups has not been effective in reducing armed robbery in
Anyigba metropolis of Kogi State, vigilante adopt various operational strategies to combat crime in Anyigba metropolis
and there are challenges faced by vigilante groups in their security efforts. The study therefore recommended that
Nigerian government should formalize the role of vigilante groups by creating legal frameworks that define their powers
and responsibilities, vigilante groups need proper training in criminal justice procedures and community policing and
finally, there should be greater cooperation between vigilante groups and formal law enforcement agencies.
